JUDGES REVIEW

Developers have been trying for years to enrich the entertainment experience by adding features target senses beyond sight and sound. In the 1950s producer/director William Castle embedded vibrators in movie seats and a few years later another producer tried Smell-O-Vision to find out if moviegoers had a nose for additional sensing.
Now, that same technique comes to a smartphone near you with 3rd Sensation, a $.99 app that triggers your phone’s vibration mechanism at key points in a video to enhance your viewing pleasure. I tried it with several commercials and movie trailers, including The Avengers – in which there is no shortage of explosions, crashes and ear-splitting superhero mayhem. The results, however, were less than spectacular on my iPhone. The phone buzzed and vibrated, seemingly in tune with the movie scenes, but I have to say this did not add anything to my handheld watching experience. Part of the reason may be that the phone’s vibration capabilities just didn’t cut it in terms of the 3rd Sensation promise. I have played with vibrating hand-held game controllers and the experience was much, much better.
So, until the technology is more refined and perhaps smartphones get more sensitive, I would say keep your $.99 jingling and vibrating in your pocket.
