A fantastic app that takes your pathetic scraps of mobile videos and turns them into interesting, well crafted movies (your friends and relatives appreciate this app most of all). Magisto continues to grow, receive funding, and registered users - it now has 5 million of them.

Macaw
Macaw, a health tracking app from US Preventative Medicine, one of the first and still one of the most robust health applications, has continued to announce strategic partnerships and position itself for growth. Most recently they integrated with MapMyFitness, a digital fitness app, to provide Macaw users interactive mapping and personal training logs to track both indoor and outdoor exercise. They also won the 2012 CTIA Awards shortly after our Showdown.

Kurio7
Last spring at CE Week NY, Life360; Kurio7, an Android tablet for kids; and iPieces, a game that mixes play pieces with the iPad, were all declared winners. The Kurio7 went on to have an awesome holiday sales tally and Pressman Toys.

BMWi Ventures thought Life360 was so compelling that it just made a huge investment in the mobile company. One of the first programs used to help families safely track their loves ones through geo-location, the app is used by more than 14 million families.

DriveSafe.ly
One of the first apps to incorporate text-to-speech technology to keep drivers attentive, it has had millions of downloads and probably saved lives. It reads your emails and texts to you while you drive. Based on iSpeech, its own voice recognition engine, the company has gone on to partner with others like Evernote and was recently featured on the Today Show as an essential app for travel.

Line2 touted its app as a way to give your phone a second line, whether you use it to separate business and personal calls or use it to stop carrying two cell phones. In 2012 it continued to be the editorial dream app.

Since October 2008 this app has been at the forefront of snapping photos and sharing photo albums. They won our Mobile Apps Showdown in 2010. Today it’s still used to actively share events and photo-streams. According to their website, the company was bought by RadiumOne.

Gwabbit is still an important lifeline for anyone who uses Outlook or Blackberry Mail. It can strip the contact information out of a mail message and enter it directly into your contact database. The company also offers cloud-based email contact solutions.
