Three apps I couldn’t live without are…
BeejiveIM. (iPhone, Blackberry) Instant Messaging has emerged as an important component of business communication. With multiple platforms available (MSN messenger, ICQ, Google Talk, etc), BeejiveIM is an invaluable solution because it allows simultaneous instant messaging from your smartphone on all the major IM platforms. It also helps one stay in touch with family when traveling.
Skype. (Available for most phones) I have to make about 100 to 200 minutes of overseas family and business calls per month. Before Skype for mobile, this would cost hundreds of dollars extra each month. Skype on my iPhone saves me about $1 per minute on average. Its also supports on BlackBerry, Android and other major platforms.
AroundMe. (iPhone) This GPS-enabled app allows me to quickly find a nearby Bank, Bar, Gas Station, Hospital, Hotel, Theater, Restaurant, Taxi, etc with just a few clicks. It works fast and integrates with Google Maps thus making it a must have app for frequent travelers.
The one thing I look for in a good app is…
…An easy-to-use GUI. Of what good are time saving features when you can’t remember where to find them or getting there involves too many steps? When choosing a new third-party app for my smartphone, the GUI can be the difference between using the app daily or uninstalling it within a day or two. Although an app’s GUI should be aesthetically pleasing, most important is the accessibility and logical placement of features that are both unique and easy to use.
