Developer’s Description: An Apple a day takes on new meaning with the first medical peripheral for the iPhone. You get a blood pressure cuff that connects your iPhone via a docking station or a 30-pin connector. Pressing a single button launches the app, inflates the cuff, and the measure your BP, pulse, date and time — all shown on a big easy-to-read display. iHealth tracks your history. And it’ll alert you if one of your vital signs veer is abnormal. You can just email the results to your doctor. Apple sees this as just the beginning of a host of iOS based home health solutions.

Pro: Medical devices that work directly with iOS devices are a no-brainer, so it’s great to see iHealth lead the way into this space.

Con: The required dock isn’t as mobile as a simple cable would be.

Why it’s a Finalist: If there’s a market where iOS peripherals can not only make a profit but also a difference, healthcare is it. iHealth’s BP dock and app are providing much needed mobile tools in a space that’s surprisingly bereft of quality solutions.

Cost: Free App with $99.99 blood pressure cuff

About

MOBILE APPS SHOWDOWN

spacer

The Mobile Apps Showdown is a fast-paced contest where you're asked to weigh in on the apps you think have what it takes to make it. For the months leading up to the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2013), we'll be presenting the contestants to you. You can try the apps, watch demos, make your feelings known, and ultimately vote on a winner. We're platform agnostic, so if it's mobile, it's in the competition.

The top ten apps will join us at CES 2013 for an action packed event hosted by Jon Hein and Gary Dell'Abate from the Howard Stern Wrap Up Show.

spacer

Robin Raskin, creator of the Mobile Apps Showdown, will be there to emcee events.

spacer

By the end of this year, nearly 50 billion apps will have been downloaded. Only you know which ones are the keepers.
