Developer’s description: Line2 adds a second number to your iPhone or Android phone, featuring carrier-grade SMS, that works over 3G, WiFi or cellular networks. Make or receive calls and SMS no matter where you are-using VoIP/Wi-Fi connections when you can, and cellular when necessary-all from the same number. Line2 features live call switching between 3G and WiFi. If you are on a Line2 3G VoIP call and walk into your house, your phone will automatically switch the call to WiFi without dropping the call. The app is ideal if you have poor cell reception at your home or office or just want to reduce your cell bill. Your phone will automatically detect the cheapest way to make a call. Also works on the iPod touch (2nd 3rd & 4th gen) and the iPad.

Pro: Simple to use, with great call quality over 3G and WiFi.

Con: Not a free app — another monthly charge for users.

Why it’s a Finalist: With a simple set-up, great call quality over 3G and WiFi, and cheap monthly rates, Line2 is an easy choice for those in need of a second line on their mobile device.

Cost: $9.95 a month

This app has changed my life! I can't believe how easy it is to use! And it's a no-brainer when you're calling overseas.

Palmier, how are you using it for texting? Their website says its not yet offered;did I miss something? Thanks!

This app gets my vote! I use it daily for both phone calls and texting. In fact, I ported over my cell number to the service. My friends love the professionalism of the service when they call me. Not to mention that when my clients call, they get the feel of calling a big office when they are actually calling my ipod touch, or it gets forwarded to my cell phone (both text messages and calls)!

Even though the website states that it it's not offered yet, I can definitely tell you that it is. I guess that they wanted to launch it and test it with existing customers before making it known on the website. That's my only logic. It works by sending you text messages to the app, and I don't know if you have to be a fully unlimited plan subscriber in order to get the text messages (like I am), or if it is available on the $9.99 a month plan, but you do indeed get text messages as well as be able to send text messages (and yes, you can send group text messages as well), and the text messages are also forwarded to your cell phone as well (if you selected another cell phone as an access number).

About

MOBILE APPS SHOWDOWN

spacer

The Mobile Apps Showdown is a fast-paced contest where you're asked to weigh in on the apps you think have what it takes to make it. For the months leading up to the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2012) we'll be presenting the contestants to you. You can try them, watch demos, make your feelings known, and ultimately vote on a winner. We're platform agnostic, so if it's mobile it's in the competition.

spacer

The top ten apps will join us at CES 2012 for an action packed event hosted by Jon Hein and Gary Dell'Abate from the Howard Stern Show.

spacer

Robin Raskin, creator of the Mobile Apps Showdown, will be there to emcee events.

spacer

By the end of this year more than 7 billion apps will have been downloaded. Only you know which ones are the keepers.
