Developer’s Description: Kids who are blind need assistance identifying the contents of canned and boxed goods, and the colors of clothing, among many other things. While, there are many of barcode readers on the market, most don’t address the needs of kids who are blind. IDEAL Item ID (I3) is a high-quality, free, open source, talking barcode reader and barcode maker. It can take a picture of a QR or standard bar code and then translate that production description into speech (using Goggle’s TTS technology). In addition to reading bar codes the application can create them to affix to anything of your choosing. For example, one blind parent created recordings of a children’s book. Then after putting the QR code each page, they used their Android smartphone to “read” to their child.

Pro: Simple, easy to use, and can have a meaningful impact; imagine someone who’s blind having a QR code on the tag of their clothes which speaks the item, colors and design.

Con: More of a tool or utility than a complete and polished app ready for immediate use.

Why it’s a Finalist:
Instead of aiming for mass appeal, Apps4Android focuses on solving clearly defined real-world problems for the disabled. The mission is admirable, the apps are free, and while not everyone will benefit from IDEAL ID Identifier, they’ve built something that empowers people to overcome serious challenges.
