Straight from CE Week in New York City, Living in Digital Times announces the winners of the Mobile Apps Showdown, the most entertaining way to learn about the hottest new apps on the market today. The highly competitive and anticipated semiannual competition pits apps against each other online and in front of a live audience, in the hopes of being crowned the best of the best. The winner of this year’s online competition is eMeals, an app that makes meal planning easier, healthier and cost effective while answering the age old question, “What’s for dinner?” MyCheck, an app that allows users to skip the paper check and pay with their mobile devices, wowed the audience of industry professionals at the live event during CE Week, also taking home the title of “Mobile Apps Showdown winner.”

“By the end of 2013, the total number of mobile app downloads is expected to reach 70 billion,” said Robin Raskin, founder, Living in Digital Times and creator of the Mobile Apps Showdown. “The Mobile Apps Showdown singles out the most promising and cutting-edge apps destined for download fame, amidst this extremely crowded marketplace.”

eMeals, an app for Android and iOS devices, allows users to select their meal plan according to their eating style, family size and even their favorite grocery store. Every week, it serves up tailored recipes along with a grocery list coordinated with weekly sales. The eMeals app syncs to the user’s eMeals subscription so they can directly view their breakfast, lunch and dinner plans via the app. They can also organize their grocery list and mark purchased items. Eating out one night? Skip a meal and it removes the items from the shopping list.

MyCheck, an app for Android and iOS devices, allows users to check in when they arrive at a restaurant, bar or nightclub and receive a four-digit code to share with the maître d’, waiter or bartender. They order as usual, but when they are ready to leave all they need to do is press “PAY” on the app and the bill will instantly appear. (No more waiting for the paper check or credit card signature slip). The app allows friends to split the check, add a tip, sign the screen authorizing a transaction, and check out without the fuss. (To celebrate its Mobile Apps Showdown win, MyCheck is offering consumers a $10 credit in the app using the code CHECKMEOUT).

eMeals and MyCheck join past Mobile Apps Showdown winners MyScript Calculator, which has gone on to achieve great fame and even a cameo in Apple’s iPhone commercial, and Kurio7, the ultimate Android tablet for families, which was a number-one-seller during holiday 2012.

How does an app reach Mobile Apps Showdown stardom?

An illustrious panel of judges, consisting of tech industry experts ranging from journalists and reviewers to consultants, had the arduous task of selecting this year’s top ten finalists (make that eleven). The apps represented a wide variety of categories, including productivity, imaging, entertainment, communications and lifestyle:

  • ActiveBudz from GOTRIbal
  • CrowdFlik™
  • DISH Anywhere
  • eMeals
  • Mommy Nearest
  • MyCheck
  • News Republic®
  • NQ Family Guardian from NQ Mobile
  • Photo fx Ultra from The Tiffen Company
  • THX tune-up™
  • VidLasso from WoRM Inc.

Finalists were announced on June 20th and online voting was opened to consumers who were encouraged to try the apps, watch demos and make their opinions known by casting their vote. Online voting closed the morning of June 26th, and the live Mobile Apps Showdown event ensued at the Metropolitan Pavilion during CE Week in New York City that afternoon.

Emerging apps that wish to compete for a coveted spot in the Mobile Apps Showdown hall of fame will have a chance at 2014 International CES. Living in Digital Times will curate a Wall of Apps exhibit open daily January 7 – 10, 2014 and host the Mobile Apps Showdown live event on January 9th during the show.
