Developer’s description: AlwaysOnPC lets you run full PC applications on your iPhone or iPod touch. Unlike remote access apps that let you tunnel into your PC, AlwaysOnPC is a “cloud” computer that comes preloaded with productivity and communication applications. AlwaysOnPC is always online, ready to go with a single tap of the Connect button on the streamlined iPhone client app. Preloaded applications include OpenOffice, Firefox (with Flash support), GIMP for photo and image editing, and Evolution messaging. And you’ll be able to multitask with all of these open source apps on your iPhone. AlwaysOnPC can also connect from your home or office computers via a simple web download that installs a VNC client. You’re able to upload files for mobile access from your iPhone, letting you leave your laptop or netbook home on occasion.  You can also install your own open source applications on AlwaysOnPC, making it truly personal.

Pros: Lets you multitask and run full PC apps, including Flash, on the iPhone; comes with 2GB of online storage; pre-loaded with suite of open source applications; able to install additional apps.

Cons: Some users report choppy connections; changing soon from one-time purchase to subscription model.

About Mobile Apps Showdown

I'm Robin Raskin, the founder of Living in Digital Times. Click to see more from me.
Our Host: Robin Raskin
...is a veteran tech journalist and founder of Living in Digital Times. She created the Showdown.

How it works:

Mobile phone apps from any platform can enter. Our experts narrow the field to a Top 20 and then Top 10. We conduct an online vote to determine a 'people's' winner. All 20 semifinalists are invited to demonstrate their apps at the Mobile Apps Showdown stage in the North Hall during CES. The Top 10 appear before a live voting audience at CES to determine an event winner.

When: Saturday, 12:30 p.m., Jan. 9, 2010

Where: Room N255-257, LVCC, North Hall, 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
