mas_top10_150h - Copy.jpg Developer’s description: Sad that your iTouch can’t make a phone call?  Truphone created a landmark application that converts the simple, wildly popular iPod touch device into a mobile phone — something that the media player was not designed to do. With the Truphone-created app, users find themselves with a powerful phone replete with calling options, instant messaging capabilities, and most attractively, low-cast calling.

For now, you can use the app with any headphone that has a mic. Soon, you can buy Trupphone’s own Microphone Adapter compatible with the 2nd generation iPod Touch. With this final addition, Truphone will offer iPod owners a comprehensive mobile phone package complete with high-quality hardware and low-cost software. With its newest 3.0 iteration, Truphone for the iPod Touch has come to include much more communications features and capabilities.

Pros: iTouch users have been crippled by not being able to place a call. Low costs, especially international calls.

Cons: Uses WiFi to place the call.

    Hi Robin,

Thanks for including us in the list - we are honoured!

Just one thing to let your readers know, and that would be good to get corrected. It is free to download Truphone, not $7.49 as you mentioned above.

    Kind Regards,
    Heath from Truphone
  • I am not so sure about the 'Sorta' in the title - I would use the word'Absolutely'!

The latest iteration of the Truphone iPhone/iPod apps - with the smart new redesigned UI makes something that was extremely good into an outstanding ESSENTIAL nust-have application.

With Wifi at home or in the office plus a MiFi to provide internet connectivity whilst on the move, the iPod Touch can come very close to the iPhone experience - but at a fraction of the price. Since I laundered my iPhone a couple of months ago (2 hours, full wash cycle at 40 degrees centigrade), I have been using the iPod Touch as my main portable device quite successfully!

Best App Ever, I love the app for adding TruFriends and calling them Free anywhere on the Globe. I like it when they are on NOKIA and I can constantly see if they are in WiFi hence reachable FREE or if I pay via Truphone OUT. Most of my friends use truphone on Nokia so my iPod app has become more important than my mobile phone

How it works:

Mobile phone apps from any platform can enter. Our experts narrow the field to a Top 20 and then Top 10. We conduct an online vote to determine a 'people's' winner. All 20 semifinalists are invited to demonstrate their apps at the Mobile Apps Showdown stage in the North Hall during CES. The Top 10 appear before a live voting audience at CES to determine an event winner.

When: Saturday, 12:30 p.m., Jan. 9, 2010
